Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team announcement news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Ulster second row Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain should the skipper does not regain fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
