Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Team to Face Team India

Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected inclusion.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes

Recent performances suggest of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia look for a solution to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Additions and Injury Updates

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Team Announcement Approach and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
